Welcome to Cisco Certified DevNet Associate (200-901)
0:01I can still remember back in the late 1980s
0:04when I first got involved with computers first and then
0:07computer networking, how exciting it was.
0:09It was awesome.
0:09I also learned about the idea of setting up a batch file.
0:13So if we had like 5 or 6 or 100 things
0:15that we needed done all the time, and it was repetitive,
0:17and took a lot of time, why not put those puppies
0:19in a batch file or a batch job, and have them just
0:22happen all at once?
0:23Sort of like the early days of automation.
0:26Well, fast forward to today.
0:27Today, we have some fairly amazing networks
0:30with a lot of networked devices.
0:31Say hello to my little friend.
0:33What is this device?
0:34Maybe it's a switch, maybe it's a multilayer switch, and what
0:37is a multilayer switch?
0:39So as part of automating our Enterprise networks,
0:41it's important to have a basic understanding
0:44of what the network devices do and how
0:46end to end IP communications works on a network.
0:50So that's where I come into the picture with this dev net,
0:53is that they've asked me to come in and provide
0:55a really concise overview and information about how
0:59IP networks function.
1:00Why we have layers, what they mean, how they interact.
1:04And the reason that's important, it's
1:05important I think for three types of people.
1:07Number one, you're a programmer or a developer,
1:10and you're going to be doing network automation,
1:12and you're going to learn how to configure and manage
1:14network devices, lots of them.
1:16It's important for you to know what these devices do,
1:18and how they operate, so that we know
1:20when we're issuing commands or pulling information, having
1:23an idea of what these devices do on the network, what
1:25their function is, is it a load balancer?
1:27Is it a firewall?
1:28Is it a router?
1:29Is it a switch?
1:30How do they interact?
1:30How they behave, and how they all work
1:32with the TCP/IP protocol suite.
1:34The second person who would really
1:35benefit from my section of the dev net content regarding
1:39network fundamentals would be somebody who maybe has never
1:42taken a moment or two just to kind of really
1:44look at how the network functions.
1:46They're curious, they use the network all the time,
1:49they're familiar with some basic concepts,
1:51but they just want a nice tight overview
1:53of how end to end IP communications
1:56work in a practical, realistic way, including the TCP/IP
2:00protocol suite, application layers,
2:02and how routers and switches and firewalls and load balancers,
2:04how do they all fit into that.
2:05So I've created some nice, easy content
2:07that you can join to take as well.
2:09And the third element is for somebody who's new to IT.
2:13If a person is brand new to the world of information
2:15technology, and they're not sure where to start.
2:17The networking fundamental section of dev net
2:20is going to provide a really solid foundation for you
2:23to build on as you start to understand
2:25how the networks operate, and how they are glued together,
2:28and how data is forwarded as frames or packets
2:30across the network.
2:32So whatever category you happen to find yourself
2:34and whatever level of interest you
2:35have in computer networking, I invite
2:37you to join me for my section of the network fundamentals
2:40as part of dev net.
2:41Now the next step, after we have an understanding
2:43from the network fundamentals piece about how
2:45the network operates, the next piece
2:47is what is the infrastructure that
2:49can allow us to have really good network automation
2:52and control of our network?
2:53What are the pieces and parts and protocols
2:55that we want to have in place so we can actually
2:58do the network automation.
2:59And those pieces are going to be brought to you
3:01in this course by Knox Hutchinson and Ben Finkel,
3:04who are both amazing.
3:06You're going to love them both.
3:07Then, finally, after we have the knowledge of the basic network
3:10devices, what they do, the infrastructure and the tools
3:13used to automate, then Knox Hutchinson
3:16is going to take us home by walking us through in a Cisco
3:19environment how to actually implement the network
3:22automation using the methods and tools
3:24available in the infrastructure, and then working
3:26with those with specific Cisco-centric devices
3:29for full network automation.
3:31So I wanted to share with you some
3:33of the benefits of the networking fundamentals
3:35portion of dev net, which I'm super
3:36excited about sharing with you.
3:38And now I'd like to turn some time over to Ben Fink.
3:40Meanwhile, I hope this has been informative for you,
3:43and I'd like to thank you for viewing.
