Web developers build the websites and web applications people interact with every day — corporate sites, e-commerce platforms, SaaS products, content publishers. The role is the most common entry point into the broader software industry, and a path that scales from junior front-end work all the way to platform-level architecture.

On any team shipping a customer-facing web property, the web developer is the role that decides whether your site loads in 800ms on a mid-range Android or in 4 seconds.

What web developers actually do

Web development splits across three common specializations: front-end (the UI users see), back-end (the server logic users don't see), and full-stack (both). Day-to-day work includes building responsive web pages, writing server-side code, integrating APIs, optimizing performance, debugging issues, and collaborating with designers and product managers.

On a small team, one web developer covers all three. On a larger team, web developers tend to specialize and partner with peers across the stack.

Required skills

Front-end skills cover HTML, CSS, JavaScript, plus at least one modern framework (React, Vue, or Angular). Back-end skills cover at least one server-side language (Node.js, Python, Ruby, PHP) and database fundamentals (SQL and at least one NoSQL store). Beyond the languages, modern web dev demands version control (Git), familiarity with build tooling, basic deployment knowledge, and an eye for accessibility and performance.

Education and certifications

Web development is the field most welcoming to non-degreed candidates. A bachelor's in CS helps but a strong portfolio and a few targeted certifications often substitute. Bootcamps and self-study tracks remain common.

  • freeCodeCamp certifications (Responsive Web Design, JavaScript)
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate
  • AWS Certified Developer - Associate
  • Meta Front-End / Back-End Developer Certificates

Career path

Most web developers start in junior front-end or full-stack roles. Advancement leads to senior web developer, tech lead, principal engineer, or engineering manager. Adjacent transitions include mobile app development, DevOps, technical product management, and developer-relations roles.

Web Developer vs. Software Developer

Significant overlap. 'Web developer' specifies the medium (the web platform); 'software developer' is a broader title that may include desktop, mobile, embedded, or web work. At many employers the titles overlap and which one appears on the job posting is more a matter of convention than a hard scope difference.

For hiring managers

If you're hiring Web Developers

If you're hiring a web developer, the portfolio is the resume. Look at deployed sites the candidate built, the code on GitHub, and the trade-offs they made — not just the resume bullets. Modern web hiring increasingly values framework depth (React, Next.js, Vue) over generalist breadth, especially above the junior tier.
