What's the main difference between AWS cloud practitioner exams CLF-C01 and CLF-C02?

When Amazon updated the Certified Cloud Practitioner exam CLF-C01 to CLF-C02, it wasn't to overhaul the test or throw out what they'd been testing. Amazon regularly updates its cert exams to stay current with changing trends, and that's what happened with CLF-C02. The biggest difference between CLF-C01 and CLF-C02 is a greater emphasis on security and compliance, and a higher degree of focus on cloud compute, storage and data resources.

How difficult is the CLF-C02 AWS certification exam?

The CLF-C02 certification exam isn't very difficult, and it could be pretty easily passed by anyone with practical experience using and managing the AWS cloud. What makes the CLF-C02 exam tricky is the same thing that makes most proprietary certifications challenging: the wording of questions and level of knowledge expected. The Certified Cloud Practitioner exam is hard if you don't prepare for it specifically, because the questions expect specific knowledge.

How much does it cost to earn the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner cert?

The AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner costs $100 to attempt. The exam for the Certified Cloud Practitioner is CLF-C02 (which replaced CLF-C01 in September 2023). You'll have 90 minutes to answer 65 multiple choice questions in four different sections: Cloud Concepts, Security and Compliance, Cloud Technology and Services, and Billing, Pricing and Support. It's not an especially challenging exam, but since you only get one chance, you'll want to be prepared.

Is the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner worth it?

Generally yes, the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner is worth it for starting a career in cloud administration. If you've already got many years of experience, it may not be worth it for you. But if you're thinking of changing careers into IT, or trying to get started, it's a good way to prove your foundational but high-level understanding of the AWS cloud and its services and the terminology related to it.

What can a certified cloud practitioner do?

The AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner is an entry-level, introductory certification. Earning it proves that you have a basic familiarity with the capacity and limitations of the AWS Cloud, from a technical, business-facing perspective. Earning it doesn't prove a deep level of practical familiarity, instead you'll be proving your familiarity with the different cloud resources AWS offers, their pricing models, and how to implement them.
